Some time ago, we shared a piece about the move by WhatsApp to stop supporting some phones and operating systems, and it looks like things have moved to that point where anyone using these devices has noticed no new updates and also that the app no longer works for them.
The company revealed that this move was necessary in order to better protect the security of millions of its users. And we can attest to the fact that older operating systems are increasingly becoming vulnerable to attacks.
This means that if you had the iOS 8 devices, you’ll not be able to create new accounts or reverify existing accounts. This was revealed by an update from WhatsApp: “On iOS 8, you can no longer create new accounts or reverify existing accounts.”
The company also revealed that for the best performance, you’ll have to use iOS 9 and higher: “For the best experience, we recommend you use the latest version of iOS available for your phone.”
“We don’t explicitly restrict the use of jailbroken or unlocked devices. However, because these modifications might affect the functionality of your device, we can’t provide support for devices using modified versions of the iPhone’s operating system.”
If you’re on Android 2.3.7, you’ll also be affected, so you might have to upgrade to a higher OS.
This is no doubt a welcome development for the company, seeing even, that many apps are no longer designed for operating systems like Android 2.3.7 and older.
