ThinkGeek USB Doomsday Device Hub Review

Ever find a gadget that just gets you excited looking at it? The ThinkGeek USB Doomsday Device Hub does that for us. This is no ordinary USB hub it has something a little special about it.

The hub is a masterpiece, it features a stainless steel finish, two toggle switches, a key slot, a big red button, a red light, and four usb ports. To operate the device you must carefully plug it into a computers USB slot, then switch on toggle switch 1, then 2, then insert and turn the key in 3. After the 3 step process has been followed very carefully, the big red light should be lit now, extreme caution should be used on the next step. Lift the plastic cover over the big red button and make sure the area is clear because we have no idea what happens when you press the button except that it makes a firing noise. Could it be throwing over a world power on the other side of the world, or maybe the world will end who knows I would think very carefully before pressing it though.

The device also functions as a 4 port usb hub other than the fact that you have so much power at your fingertip. With this hub your peons will grovel before you as taunts of world domination are uttered. But seriously, if you are into cool gadgets as much as we are check out the ThinkGeek USB Doomsday Hub. You won’t regret it.

Microsoft patents a Wired/Wireless controller for Xbox?

Now who wouldn’t want a controller for their Xbox that could switch between wired and wireless mode whenever you want. Microsoft has filed a patent for a Wireless and wired Xbox controller that can switch between both modes seamlessly without interrupting gameplay. An excerpt from the patent:

A game controller operates in both a wired mode and a wireless mode, and is able to switch between these two modes without permanent disruption to an ongoing game. During a transition from one mode to another, a host gaming system detects when the controller is physically disconnected (for wired mode to wireless mode) or connected (for wireless mode to wired mode). Upon detection, the host gaming system stores the game data and user information and establishes a new communication link with the controller. The host gaming system subsequently reassociates the game data and user information with the game controller as it begins operating in the new mode. This allows the player to continue game play without interruption.

RedBox may challenge Netflix for web video domination

You may have heard of RedBox before, its those little red kiosks at Wal-Mart or McDonalds and many other places that offer DVD rentals for only $1. Well now they want to be more competitive with Netflix, by offering an online streaming service of their own. In a recent interview the president of the company said:

“The way we look at it is, How can it help us deliver to our customers things we can’t do in our kiosks?” Lowe said. “What role might it play in expanding our selection?”

This would be a bold move for RedBox, it may be a while before they will be able to catch up to Netflix’s dominating lead in the movie streaming business, but they actually might be able to do it. RedBox also faces some fierce competition from companies other than Netflix according to Bloomberg:

Redbox also faces competition from Apple Inc. and Best Buy Co., which sell movie downloads. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, bought the Vudu Inc. online entertainment service in February and Sears Holdings Corp., the largest department store owner, said on June 22 it plans to sell and rent movies online through an agreement with Sonic.

Well this may be good for consumers, it could drive down the monthly costs of online streaming and bring more new hit titles to your TV or computer.

Google tests multiple account login

Wouldn’t it be great if you could log into all of your Google accounts at the same time if you have multiple? Well it seems that Google may be implementing a way to do this in the near future. Right now it can be done with scripts such as a Greasemonkey script, but that isnt as easy as Google doing it for us.

The people over at Google Operating System have had users submit a screenshot of what looks like a beta test for multiple account login. It appears that it will be available for Calendar, Code, Docs, Gmail, Reader, and Sites for the test but surely it will be across all Google apps when its released.

Apple Censors Consumer Report from Forums

So the iPhone 4 is not recommended by Consumer Reports, and Apple users have been discussing this on the Apple forums all week. However Apple does not like their products being bashed on their own website, so of’course the threads are being deleted by the mods. Even though they are still being deleted, they are popping up so fast on the forums that the ban-hammer cannot move fast enough.

Another interesting fact brought up by Gizmodo, is that even though Consumer Reports cannot recommend the iPhone 4 to consumers the phone still scores the highest of any other smart-phone on the market today.

If you head on over to the Apple forums you still may be able to find some of the treads that have not been deleted yet.
