Akitio MyCloud Mini Review

So I got my hands on this little device from Akitio called the MyCloud Mini. This device basically lets you host media on your network and share it anywhere you would like. So basically it lets you have your own mini cloud at home for media and document sharing. Pretty cool right? Well, I got to thinking what if I could attach a hard drive to the unit and load it with a bunch of videos to share to my Boxee on my TV? The MyCloud Mini supports the attachment of USB hard drives and┬ástorage expansion via eSATA (RAID 0 or RAID 1). The MyCloud also supports streaming to any media device that supports UPNP and DNLA support as follows: Supported UPnP Clients Xbox 360 (JPG, MP3, WMV, XviD) PlayStation 3 (JPG, MP3, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, XviD) iTunes (MP3) DLNA certified UPnP clients Windows 7 (Windows Media Player) The device does not require any special networking knowledge because you manage it from a remote server by visiting myakitio.com and entering the Mac address and login information. When you log into the web interface you are greeted with something like a normal computer desktop.   The MyCloud Mini can access your social networks and pull down your videos and pictures directly. It can also download your YouTube videos to the MyCloud Mini. There isn’t much more about it, if you like what you have read so far, you will like the box. The box sells for around $100 USD and can be found at various outlets. The MyCloud Mini from Akitio has got some decent specs which I have laid out below for your reference: Model No. MyCloud Mini Part No. MCS-LN2SPA-AKT Certifications CE FCC CPU Dual-core 750MHz (SOC) Memory 256MB DDR2 SDRAM 256MB NAND flash Case material High quality aluminum housing Internal hard drive(s) 2.5″ SATA-I or SATA-II hard drive (1.5Gb/s or 3.0Gb/s) Capacity 20GB – 1.5TB HDD height 9.5mm-14.8mm Supports large volumes over 2TB XFS file system Front I/O 1 x Dual color status LED Rear I/O 1 x Power receptacle 1 x RJ45 connector (10/100/1000) with two LEDs for link and activity 2 x USB 2.0 host connectors 1 x eSATA host connector 1 x Reset button 1 x Power button LAN interface 1000BASE-T IEEE 802.3ab 100BASE-TX IEEE 802.3u 10BASE-T IEEE 802.3 Auto MDIX Automatic speed negotiation and downshift Low power consumption; advanced power management USB interface 2 x USB 2.0 host for USB flash drives, hard drives... read more
