E3 2012 – Core Blaze First Look

On the final day of E3, Gamania sent a shuttle to drive me from the convention center over to their headquarters in downtown LA to check out their upcoming title: Core Blaze. Given that the only previous showing of the game took place in Taipai, I was pretty excited. Yes the game is an MMO, and yes the MMO market is utterly saturated. However, Core Blaze has some feature that look to set it apart, including weather effects and it’s usage of the Unreal Engine 3.

E3 2012 – Studio Ghibli’s Ni No Kuni First Look

Having been a Hayao Miyazaki fan for a significant portion of my life, I was only too happy to jump at the opportunity when I was offered an interview with Bandai-Namco to go over their upcoming game collaboration Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, done in conjunction with Studio Ghibli. I also got to play it for a brief interlude on the showroom floor at the PlayStation booth. The graphics, while “cartoon” like in aesthetic, are breathtaking in quality. It was like being able to control the characters while watching one of Miyazaki’s films.

Sim City 5 vs. Cities XL a future showdown?

As many of you may now know, SimCity 5 is slated for release in early next year. Maxis is promising us a glorious and grand return of the title, with amazing new game play and world set up. Yet, they now have some major competition in the city building and simulation genre. SimCity’s cheif competition is Cities XL, which first appeared in 2009 to fill the city building and simulation void left by Maxis and EA when they chose to take such a long break from the franchise. It offers users a full 3D world that could be zoomed into street level and panned 360°, as well as multiplayer capabilities. Cities XL offers and entire globe full of city locations and a variety or maps to choose from, with stunning new and updated graphics it brought to us everything that Sim City 4 couldn’t or hadn’t.

E3 2012 – Scribblenauts Unlimited, Beautifully Rendered

While at E3 I had the opportunity to play the upcoming Scribblenauts title for Wii U for a few minutes. Once it was announced at Nintendo‘s conference, people seemed pretty excited about it, as the innovative title is well loved on portable consoles but this will be it’s first appearance on a home console. Given the fact that it was previously on DS, it lends itself extremely well to adaptation on the Wii U GamePad, with it’s similar touch screen controls and navigational button layouts.

E3 2012 – Cryptic Studios Brings Us Free MMO Neverwinter

My colleagues and I had an exciting opportunity to meet with the people at Perfect World while we were at E3. They gave us a brief tutorial and allowed us to plunge into their upcoming game, Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter. Unbelievably, this new MMO will be entirely free to play. Having heard this before about other games, I expected to see something with lackluster graphics and a simpleton storyline. With those expectations in place, I was entirely unprepared for what was placed in front of me for play.
