Remote Jr is one of the best apps I have ever used to connect to my computer. I am able to control every aspect of my computer remotely from my iPhone! Remote Jr was easy and fast to setup and get going. All I had to do was install the iPhone app, install the desktop app and connect! Easy as 1, 2, 3. Remote Jr will even forward its own ports on your router as long as it supports UPNP and is turned on, all you have to do is check a box! Simple!

I have used the Remote Jr Ultimate app to view my desktop on both my Windows 7 machine and my Snow Leopard Mac, and they both work great! I have also used Remote Jr to control movies that are playing on my computer screen without going to the computer. The remote desktop feels very smooth when interacting from the iPhone. Remote Jr has so much untapped potential, it will be an experience on the iPad when it is released. This app will be added to the Apps for College Students section because it would be great for college utility as well a work, home, and fun.

iNet for the iPhone or iPod touch will allow you to see what hosts and services are available and running on your network. iNet allows you to scan the network that you are connected to for anything that is connected to it. When you find a particular host, you can run a port scan on it to see what ports are open, iNet will also display what Bonjour services are running and able to connect to. Bonjour services are zero configuration networking  services for connecting to devices such as printers.

The iNet app is really easy to use and I think it is very hand to see what is available on your network. iNet allows you to see what network vulnerabilities are visible on your own network from your mobile device.

Scan network

iNet shows the devices connected to your local network, e. g. computer or router, along with their name, IP and vendor. You can find out the name, vendor and IP of the connected devices as well as the kind and number of running Bonjour services on that particular device. You can also perform a classic portscan on the choosen device.

The technology used in iNet scans on a very low level, therefore you even find machines that don`t want to be found, e. g. a computer running in stealth mode.

Most items are displayed by their real name so that you can easily identify what is going on in the network you are scanning, which computers are connected or which services are running. For most Apple Macintosh Computers you even see the particular computer model.

The last 10 scan results are saved automatically. In addition you can save your scan results and name them. A send scan per mail is available too.

Ping

Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network. The ping section in iNet enables you to find out wether an IP exists (if its ping service is enabled; otherwise you will get no response ). Bonjour-Browser

Bonjour or “zero configuration networking” is a widely used industry standard for connecting computer and computer devices ,e.g. printers. Portscan

Applications on devices communicate with the outside world through so called TCP-Ports. iNet detects whether ports are open or closed.

A quick portscan is available after performing a network scan. Here iNet checks TCP ports in the range of 1 to 1000 plus a number of standard ports that are often used.

A sophisticated portscan is available via the main menu of iNet. You can select from predefined portlists, enter port ranges and single ports. The ports to scan can be saved per device. For all found open ports the service using this port is displayed by its real name if available.

Device info

The device info in iNet shows some information related to your iPhone or iPod touch, e. g. its name or its IP.

Do you ever run to the grocery store and once you get there you forgot what you were going to get? Well, Nikolaj Schumacher has made remembering easy.

With the ShopShop app you can easily add what you need to get from the grocery store right into your iPhone or iPod Touch. It is this easy, Once ShopShop is open, just press the + sign to start adding grocery’s to the list. ShopShop is a very simple and easy to use application, not fancy or complex, just easy. If you want to remove an item once it has been entered, just swipe your finger across them do mark them done, or hold your finger on them to edit them.

Melodis Voice Dialer is an app that allows you to call people from your contacts list by speaking their name. Voice Dialer is quite simple, all you have to do is launch the app, and press the big green button and speak a contacts name on your phone. After the app finds the correct name, all you have to do is tap the number or say Call next time before you speak the name and it will autodial.

Now there have been many people with negative reviews for this app, but I did not have any of those negative experiences while reviewing it. I do however have a helpful tip, make sure that you are speaking very clearly when speaking a contacts name. It is very easy for a program to misunderstand what you are saying and match some other contact. You can’t ask for more, for a free app!

When they said RedLaser was impossibly accurate when scanning barcodes with the iPhone I was skeptical. But when I tried RedLaster I was amazed how quickly it scanned. I have had terrible luck with other barcode scanners for the iPhone and I thought it was because I did not have the 3gs, but I was wrong.

After starting up RedLaser it will ask you if you want to search locally for prices as well as online. I would of’couse want local prices to compare with online prices. When you get to the main screen that says Scanned Items you just press the lightning bolt at the bottom of the screen. You are then redirected to your camera which has red arrows that show you how to line up the barcode. After lining it up and holding still it will scan and mine has been 100% accurate so far! This app does perform better than Neoreader and ShopSavvy.

For anyone who has tried other barcode scanners such as neoreader or shopsaavy, this app is worth the money because it takes the hassle out of scanning from your iPhone.

The original barcode scanner that was available for mobile phones is now available for the iPhone. The app is called ShopSavvy and this is how it works. Find a barcode of one of the following types; UPC, EAN, or ISBN and scan it with the ShopSavvy app and it will then search the web for price comparisons. Not only will the app show you the lowest price but where to get it, and even where that business is located.

Now I tried this app on my iPhone 3G and had some issues with it. I noticed that you have to have near perfect conditions to get this to work with the 3G. For example you need to have adequate lighting available, also you must have no reflections on the barcode, and a well focused image. Now I did not try this with the iPhone 3GS, I am sure with it’s new auto focus camera, it should be able to make a clearer image of the barcode.

Battery Magic “FREE” 2.0 for the iPhone has recently been released and has added some new features to the application. Now you are able to change the look and feel of the battery by changing the colors. Just tap the customize button at the bottom of the battery and choose the color that you want. Battery Magic now also notifies you when your battery is needing a recharge. The PRO version of this app has a feature called Charge Alert which sounds a pleasant audible noise when the battery needs charging.

Now I gave this app 4/5 stars because I felt that it could do more, it is a great app don’t get me wrong but I felt there could be more features especially to justify buying the paid app. But this app is a great app to have and also lets you know how much time you have to do certain things like talk time on 3g, so the app is worth it in that respect.
