Akitio MyCloud Mini Review

So I got my hands on this little device from Akitio called the MyCloud Mini. This device basically lets you host media on your network and share it anywhere you would like. So basically it lets you have your own mini cloud at home for media and document sharing. Pretty cool right?

Well, I got to thinking what if I could attach a hard drive to the unit and load it with a bunch of videos to share to my Boxee on my TV? The MyCloud Mini supports the attachment of USB hard drives and storage expansion via eSATA (RAID 0 or RAID 1). The MyCloud also supports streaming to any media device that supports UPNP and DNLA support as follows:

Supported UPnP Clients

  • Xbox 360 (JPG, MP3, WMV, XviD)
  • PlayStation 3 (JPG, MP3, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, XviD)
  • iTunes (MP3)
  • DLNA certified UPnP clients
  • Windows 7 (Windows Media Player)

The device does not require any special networking knowledge because you manage it from a remote server by visiting and entering the Mac address and login information. When you log into the web interface you are greeted with something like a normal computer desktop.

The MyCloud Mini can access your social networks and pull down your videos and pictures directly. It can also download your YouTube videos to the MyCloud Mini. There isn’t much more about it, if you like what you have read so far, you will like the box. The box sells for around $100 USD and can be found at various outlets.
