Apple held a press event earlier today, in New York City, that was centered around education. During the event Apple unveiled iBooks 2 with their addition of electronic textbooks for purchase. The new Apple book-stand will now include education related content for all those aspiring scholars. Apple has partners with some big names in textbook making that include Pearson, McGraw Hill, DK, E.O. Wilson Foundation, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The new iBooks 2 app is available today as a free download within the Apple App Store. Most titles will be priced at $14.99 or less. A new feature called iBooks Author, a free authoring tool, will allow any Mac user the ability to create iBook textbooks and publish them to the iBookstore.
The content supported will include fullscreen books, interactive 3D objects, diagrams, photos, and videos. Students will be able to experience interactive textbooks with just a tap or swipe of their finger. Physical textbooks make be looking at their eventual demise with the on-screen one stop access to edit highlights, note taking, searching, definitions and with the cost most likely being minimal for textbook makers, as compared to what hard copy books must cost to make and ship, we could expect to see lower costs.
Apple also unveiled their new iTunes U app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch that will allow students and teachers access to the world’s largest library of free educational content and over 20,000 education related applications. The iTunes U app is also available today as a free download.
