Researchers at the University of Michigan have come up with a new engine design that could change the transportation industry forever. This new engine requires requires no transmission, crankshaft, pistons, valves, fuel compression, cooling systems or fluids. Without any of those extra components, care design will be greatly impacted. This new engine is called a wave-disk generator which also reduces emissions by up to 90%.
The new engine is equipped with a rotor that has wave like channels that trap and mix oxygen and fuel as the rotor spins. The new design is a huge jump in engine technology and quite an achievement for the engineers at the University of Michigan. Check out the video below for more details on the new design.
The Wave Disk Generator also uses 60 percent of its fuel for propulsion while a standard car engine uses just 15 percent. As a result, the generator is up to 3.5 times more fuel efficient than typical combustion engines. The team expects to have a prototype up and running by the end of this year and have them on the road in approximately 3 years if everything goes well.
As fuel prices rise all over the world, this could not have come at a better time. [msn]
