Why is everyone attacking Geohot?

Okay so Geohot (George Hotz) was sued by Sony for hacking the PlayStation 3 and releasing the root keys out to the web. So what! Everyone is against him and his legal battle with Sony, saying that he deserves it. I have got news for you guys, Geohot has never condoned or supported piracy or hacking on the PSN network. He does however support the ability to hack YOUR OWN equipment that you have purchased legally and therefore releases tools to do so.

Right on his website and the statement below it states that he fully supports anti-piracy when it comes to equipment and networks that are not your own. Sony should not be allowed to sue based only on the fact that he is hacking his own PlayStation, I do agree that releasing the root key for the PlayStation may have been ill-advised. However like I stated before, he never condoned the piracy on equipment other than your own.

I am an advocate against mass piracy, do not distribute anyone’s copyrighted work but my own, do not take crap lying down, and am even pro DRM in a sense. For example, I believe Apple has every right to lock down their iPhone in the factory as much as they want, but once it’s paid for and mine, I have the right to unlock it, smash it, jailbreak it, look at it, and hack on it. Fortunately, the courts agree with me on this point.

Geohot does not control what other people do with those tools on the PSN network or on their own consoles, he just makes it easier. Nobody was mad when he jailbroke the first iPhone and then released said Jailbreak to the public for everyone else. Now as soon as he Jailbreaks the PlayStation 3 and posts information and tool-kits for it he is the worst person on the planet.

What about all of the other hackers that break into Windows based systems or other systems on a daily basis? Should they have stones thrown at them by the general public as well? Geohot has already scored support from organizations like EFF, and just regular people and is still taking donations on his blog. Feel free to leave a comment below if you have an opinion on the matter.

Update: I do understand that I could have written this article a little better than I did. I wanted to voice my opinion on the matter and I am glad that other people’s comments can open my eyes to sides I didn’t consider before. Thank you.

Actions speak louder than words. He provided a means for pirates to download games for free and play them on their console, all so someone could play pong on their PS3. Don’t be ignorant and think he didn’t know the consequences of his actions. He hacked the i-Phone and there’s lots of piracy on that, did he really think,oh well they pirated on that but THIS will be different. Do you really think he is that stupid?

I wonder if someone stole everything in your house because he believed it to be for a good cause, would you would be so quick to defend him.

    Yes. Absolutely.

You are all dumbasses. He stole nothing. He altered a piece of hardware he bought and owns. His CFW does not, I repeat, does not allow piracy it simply allows you to install programs without asking for sonys permission. if someone else then alters his code to allow you to play pirated games that isnt his fault. If by that logic it is his fault then really its sony’s fault , because they wrote the original program with the hole in it that allowed him to alter it with a hole left in it to allow someone else to make a program to allow piracy. Thats stupid. We consumers have rights. If sony wants to keep people from altering hardware they bought and payed for then they shouldn’t sell it they should lease it to you and say, hey, you dont own this so you have no right to alter it in anyway, but the didnt. they sold it. he owns it and he didnt pirate a damn thing so there isnt anything they can do about it besides take him to court and empty his pockets with legal fees ala lik sang, bleem!, ect. Stop the fanboy shit this is a serious matter with serious implications on the rights of consumers.

The big difference here is that Mr Hotz’s unlocking of the iPhone only allowed more people to use the device, as well as allowing people to use apps that Apple blocked because they competed with Apple’s own apps, which is why the courts sided with Hotz in the matter. In this case he didn’t just “hack his own PS3”, he essentially stole information from Sony and distributed it to everyone, knowing full well that in addition to “unlocking features that were taken away from the PS3 community” (which, let’s be honest, nobody really used anyways) would also allow for a massive influx of pirating and security exploits.

As for “he never condoned the piracy on equipment other than your own”, do you not grasp what you just said? You’re basically saying that piracy is alright, so long as we only do it on our own computers/consoles. That’s like saying murdering someone is ok, so long as we only do it in our own homes, or only as long as we murder our own children. I realize murder and piracy are two completely different things, but if you’re going to condone one crime with such idiotic stipulations you might as well support all of them that way.

The fact that he expects people to contribute to his legal fund only goes to show that the real reason he does any of this stuff is to get attention. And the fact that people are actually doing it only goes to show that there are a lot of stupid people in the world who are falling for it.

Personally, I hope Sony wins and this dude ends up being banned from using any electronic devices and is forced to shovel coal for a living or some other crappy menial labor job, and I hope that Sony figures out a way to brick every console that has been jailbroken thanks to this ass hat.

    “Free technology” my ass.

So what you’re saying is the guys a retard. If he’s honestly stupid enough to think that opening the floodgates like that wouldn’t result in piracy, the mans either been living under a rock for 7 years or was dropped on his head.

I respect what this guy has done, go the extra mile to show ANYTHING IS HACKABLE! Got to admire that

  • http://thegamecon.blogspot.com/ plmko

Wow you clearly have no clue what your saying, Sony have never condoned alteration of your hardware just alternation of their patented software which you never own, you simply own the liscence which gives you the right to use it under certain conditions.

It’s Sony’s fault that they left holes in the secruity? Geez maybe that means it gives everyone rights to become an oppurtunist and steal everyone who accidentally leaves their cars unlockedin the parking lot, that’s just plain stupid.

Look at the big picture my friend, GeoHot maybe saying one thing about DRM this and anti-piracy that but didn’t the idea ever occur to you that his actions have been advoacting the exact opposite? He mentions abuse of law by Sony so they can get him, but yet he is trying to abuse his previous meddle with the law on the Iphone jailbreak case, what comes around goes around.

Finally you speak of everyone who is against GeoHot as fanboy, but yet you list examples of Sony’s history that GeoHot himself has listed, you sure you are not a fanboy of GeoHot yourself?

This is the same reason I go around handing out crack to children. I am not condoning children becoming crackheads, I just think they should have the choice.

LAWLZ! What an egregiously fallacious argument…

He could at least have a decent website.

  • http://twitter.com/klarax Gavin Powell

I agree. Plmko, i bet sony wouldn’t mind him hacking the system. But, he didnt have to spam the internet with the root key.

  • http://www.tekgoblin.com Sanity

I do agree with you that these people should be blamed if they cause direct harm to someone or something else, but indirectly… no.

What you explained is the same thing that happened to Apple when he jailbroke the device. Users were then able to pirate apps, write malicious code, etc etc.

“he never condoned the piracy on equipment other than your own”

I did state that I do not agree with the release of the Root key, but if it wasn’t him that did it someone else probably would have.

  • http://www.tekgoblin.com Sanity

Thank you for your argument, I understand both sides of the ordeal now and may write an updated article to reflect this.

I support this and I hate anyone who goes after Geohot. F**k YOU SONY!

There is a show on tv which robbers are allowed to rob people in order to show how vulnerable they are. Find another metaphor.

  • http://getyourgadgetsgoing.com Tristan Thomas

Actually, that is a bad representation of whats going on. The guy grew crack for himself, someone took it form him and sold it to children…you still blame the farmer more then the seller?

He is a menace, just with all other hackers. If you want to hack, hack, but hack your own. There is no need to publicize it. These people have social and mental problems, they want attention, and they feel the need to cause harm to people just like him (I don’t mean psychopaths like him, I mean ordinary men and woman) working at their jobs. Its people like these that think they innovate, but they dont, they are simply giving a heart ache to the real innovators like music artists, movie directors, and people like- Sony, who create their product to entertain people.

Those people make the rules, Hackers and low-lifes like GeoHot don’t and can’t make the rules!

Hackers are psychopaths in the sense that, They should realize the money, the pain, and time is being spent, He is causing another man a headache and a bad situation.
No need to be attention whores, Hack your own system, nobody wants to hear how awesome you are by doing so. Dont spread what you have done, thats personal.

GeoHot is a menace, and an absolute prick. He is naive, ignorant, and immature.
The number one thing he needs right now isn’t mercy, or redemption. He needs a life!

Only ignorant Fanboy making him(Geo) look bad, I guarantee 73% of them(PS3 fanboy) including me, iPhones or iPad are jailbroken. HYPOCRITES.

Because whether he intended it for piracy or not he still basically helped enable it, the otherOS option was pointless I used it for a week and it was slow and clunky.Nobody cared about the Iphone because it was a phone all it enabled people to do was use an Iphone with any cell carrier. All most people have done with the ps3 is cheat to the point that games are unplayable online, and make it so they could pirate games. You couldn’t buy an Iphone and make it work without a service.Thats why every real gamer that doesn’t feel the need to hack their ps3 attacks geohotz

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NIX4CLOECRSTWG7GMDKO742ZKU Big Evil

Well I’m a ps3 owner, I have never felt the need to hack my ps3 I like it to work and there is nothing that I want to use it for outside of playing games and movies. I have a computer for anything else I feel the need to do. I also don’t feel the need to cheat the hell out of online multiplayer games, because I know at the end of the day it does nothing for me to cheat and win every game. I also like buying my games from a retailer, I have money so pirating games is not for me or any of the other people I knwo with ps3s

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000270380258 Morgan McMaster

Better representation! The guy made the perfect recipe for crack, copied the recipe page, and handed it out to everyone. But he doesn’t like using crack as a drug.

one big difference between the iphone and ps3 is that with a jailbroken iphone, the online experience is not affected. however, with a ‘hacked’ ps3, it is possible to play ‘modded’ games that enable modes that the developers never meant to be a part of the game. anyone with any amount of common sense can figure that could and would happen.
