iOS 4.2 is now available, open up iTunes now to update your device. If you do not see the update immediately you may have to wait a while because the update servers are quite busy at the moment. While we wait lets go over whats new to iOS 4.2.
Multitasking on the iPad
iOS 4.2 brings all of the multitasking features we have been enjoying on our iPhone’s to the iPad. We are now able to double click the home button to check what else is running on the iPad and to quickly change to different apps.
Folders on the iPad
Along with multitasking comes folders. We are now able to organize our apps on the iPad into individual folders.
With Airprint we are now able to print from any iOS device that can run 4.2. Apple claims there is no software to download and no drivers to install. We will have to see which printers this will actually work with.
With AirPlay we are able to digitally stream media from our iOS 4.2 device wirelessly to an Apple TV and AirPlay-enabled speakers. Check out the video below for a demo of AirPlay.
Find My iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch
Once a feature only available to MobileMe customers is now available free to everyone. With Find My iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch you never have to worry about misplacing your iOS device. The feature also allows you to display a message on your iOS device remotely, set a passcode lock remotely, and wipe the device remotely.
GameCenter is now available on the iPad in this update which brings achievements and matchmaking as well as leaderboards.
iOS 4.2 also brings TV show rentals from iTunes for only $.99 an episode. Text search on safari and much more.
