So today the iPhone 4 was released, millions of inpatient customers had to wait in very long lines to get their hands on Steve Jobs newest creation. The wait in line was well worth it once the iPhone was in your hands. But the day did not go off without a hitch, and I will explain.
First, I was at the Apple Store in Indianapolis, Indiana (Keystone) and the Apple Store there happens to be in a Simon Mall. So Of’course Simon Mall Security would not let us near the property till 6am. Well there were at least a couple thousand people there, so the police were called and we were ushered off the mall property. Well eventually it became too much for the police and they left it to the mall cops so eventually we got in line. Here are a few pictures below and a video.
Second, Apple seems to have lost my iPhone 4 reservation, even though on the website it said I was confirmed, the fact that I did not get an email meant that Apple never got it somehow. I honestly think Apple dropped the ball on reservations, something happened between the Apple site and ATT, not sure but I was very disappointed to find out my iPhone was not reserved when I arrived. I did get my phone after 7 hours in line though.
The final issue today that is exploding all over the web is the issue with the iPhone 4 reception. This issue has been covered well by Gizmodo so I will touch on it lightly. The iPhone 4 reception issue only occurs when you touch 2 antennas on the iPhone 4 at the same time. For Example, if you are left handed you will place your fingers on the lower part of the phone more to the left while touching the Bluetooth and Wifi antenna on the left side while also touching the GSM antenna on the right side. Well this will cause a dropped call or no reception. Gizmodo has a picture which I will include below on how you should properly hold the phone to prevent this.
Here is a video below with an example of the poor reception with the iPhone 4.
Another solution is to simply purchase the iPhone 4 case which covers the stainless steel band around the phone which will prevent you from making contact with both antennas. However I feel this issue should have been solved in early beta testing of the iPhone 4 before its major release to consumers.
Apple has also released a statement concerning the issue with reception on the iPhone 4 today and I will include it below:
Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases. -Apple via Engadget
So by the looks of it, Apple really doesn’t care at this point, they just want you to purchase a case for the phone or hold it differently. Honestly I don’t know what to think, I will keep you updated as much as possible as new news arrives.
